The fellowship in Advanced Gynecologic Endoscopic Surgery at the University in Louisville, Kentucky is a two-year academic program. In 2001, we were initiated into the approved SRS fellowship program sponsored by the AAGL/SRS. We are one of the few academic centers in the country that offers a fellowship program in Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery.
The program not only incorporates the fellow in the university setting where they are involved with the teaching of residents, but also involves alternating in the operating room with two very busy physicians in private practices: Dr. Jonathan Reinstine with Associates in OB/GYN and Dr. Lori Warren with Women First of Louisville. The entire gamut of endoscopic surgery will be experienced by the fellow including training in urogynecologic procedures and pelvic reconstruction.
The fellow will also have the ability to attend and to work in the fresh tissue laboratory. This experience in teaching residents on the cadaver by laparoscopy is an outstanding and unique opportunity. Throughout the year, the fellow will attend a biostatistics course that is taught at the University of Louisville and will participate in academic conferences. Also, the fellow is required to participate in an independent research project that is expected to be published in a peer-reviewed journal at the culmination of their fellowship.
After completion of the program, the fellow should be able to confidently perform most advanced laparoscopic and hysteroscopic procedures and be eminently qualified to continue on in academics in a supervisory capacity.
